Club Atlético Boca Juniors

What a club! There’s no other like it. Boca, the people’s team, Los Xeneizes, with its super fans, the bosteros. Founded by Italian immigrants, Boca Juniors in their yellow/blue kit play to win, especially over their city rivals River Plate. Boca is the epitome of football passion and the stadium La Bombonera, its home.

Club Atlético River Plate

River Plate at El Monumental – always history in the making
Historic, prideful, multiple cup and league winners… from Angél Labruna to Norberto Alonso in the famous white shirts with the red diagonal band, River Plate is not just a team but an institution. Like arch-rivals Boca Juniors, Los Millonarios were born at the turn of the century in the port of Boca but named for the English translation of Rio de la Plata stamped on imported crates. Unlike Boca, they moved to swish suburb Núñez, bought pricey players, and built the truly spectacular Estadio Monumental. Raw football. Powerful football. Real football, River plate are the real deal.

Argentinos Juniors

Founded in 1904 and with strong links to the Argentine Socialist Party, Argentinos Juniors was Diego Maradona’s first professional football club. The stadium bears his name and the surrounding streets area adorned with his image. On the pitch, Agentinos Juniors are one of the 8 Argentine clubs to have won Copa Libertadores and today prove themselves as continual nuisance their bigger neighbours. Not a traditional “big 5”, but a fiesty and characterful club where passion reigns.

Independiente (Los Diablos Rojos (Red Devils))

Historically known as ‘The King of the Cups‘ due to the number of international trophies they won, Independiente’s past is much more successful than their recent results, but the fan’s passion and loyalty remains.

Racing Club de Avellaneda

Racing as known as the club of firsts – the first club in the world to win seven league titles in a row, first Argentine club to win a national cup, and the first world champion (Intercontinental Cup) Argentine club. This 18-time Premera Division winning club also has 13 National Cups in its cabinet. They survived bankruptcy in 1998 and are still mixing it at the top of the league.

Boom. Bap.
He shoots he scores, BOCAAAAAAAA

“Our legendary player, yes it was Maradona. But it was also Riquelme. He won five league titles with us but I like to remember his first goal of so many for us back in 1996. He was just a teenager, twisting and turning all over the place, finally moving tightly inside the 18-yard box as the ball came in from the left he arrowed it first time into the top left hand corner of the goal. Magic!”

A football fanatics dream trip

I went with Looking FC to Buenos Aires for the Superclassico, and it was everything and more.

Our trip captain Dani & everyone at Looking (Shout out to Adam) were super helpful and planned everything brilliantly. By having a local as the trip captain, it felt like we got a real look at the authentic football culture as opposed to a more corporate feel which was great.
